The inhabitants and their culture are rich and interesting. The main characters, Pua and Angie, are strong, likable, and the children are lovely. The story builds up and never lets go until the end. A well written book, worth buying and reading several times. Go ahead! You will enjoy it!

The early paperback originals by Carol are out of print now, but for fantasy lovers they are worth searching out and buying used. A Peace Corps veteran who served in Micronesia, a resident of the Big Island of Hawaii who worked there as a journalist, Carol knows her South Pacific mythology and how to spin a suspenseful story as well. "Reefsong" and "Sorcerous Sea" and "Demon Drums" feature courageous females, bloody battles, mystical religions, deep ocean wonders, and the occasional love interest. Hard to describe, hard to put down after a few chapters. I knew the author briefly, many years ago, before she became a novelist. I can proudly say I am jealous of her achievements. If you want a few hours of escape from your normal, land-locked, fully-human environment, try these books if you can find them. Her work is really different, and not just for women "Demon Drums" has some tension over torture that was hard for me to stomach. The other titles are less bloody.

Read the whole series years ago, and my paperback copies are getting pretty ragged. Decided to get the version before my hard copies fall apart completely, so I'll always have it to go back to. Really well done--Carol, when are you going to come out of retirement?
Wonderful story line filled with characters you want to love and hate. It exposes Humanities greed and fractions with the natural world around us.
My first Carol Severance book...This is a beautiful book to read.
As a lover of sci-fi novels, and a dive instructor in real life, the book and title caught my eye. I was not dissapointed.
It was beautifully written, with passionate characters and interesting reef life, and a good story...if you have ever dived before, you will want to journey there. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
I love water based fiction. There is so little of it. I first read reef song when I was in middle school. It was a book that I picked up at the library. It was also one of the books that catapulted me from Young Adult stuff into more intense, conflict and character driven science fiction.

Reefsong is about a very driven woman who is pushed from one element into another. She has to deal with problems and she does it without spending excessive amounts of time bemoaning her own loss and change. She is not happy but that does not mean she is going to put aside her task and whine about life not being fair.

The main feel is colonial vs big company.

The cast is an interesting mesh of adult and juvenile. The evil people are evil and greedy and it is satisfying to see them loose. The science is fun and it works in the story. It is a very satisfying read.
Smart, clever female heroes in an excellently well-built world facing a threat so plausible it’s hard not to think this could be real. I first read this in high school, and each re-reading decade after decade (not to give my age away) has shown me what a masterful build this book is. Levels I can understand as I grow in my world understanding are revealed with each reading. Only niggle, and it’s a small one, this cover is seriously much less awesome than the art from the 1st edition.
